Ever since puberty hit, you've been acutely aware of your underarms. We've all fallen victim to the dreaded pit stain and found ways – some more extreme than others – to deal with the embarrassing excess of moisture. From trying to drown our insecurities with an array of deodorants and antiperspirants with varying degrees of disappointment to wearing a T-shirt to soak up the sweat before it reaches the outermost layers of our clothing, the battle of the pit stain has taken down many a lesser man. But not you. Armed with the following knowledge, you'll never have to unnecessarily wear more than one shirt, wander aimlessly down the drugstore deodorant aisle, or – horrors of all horrors – keep your arms pinned to your sides to hide those marks that are just waiting to betray you. And, the more you understand the value of upgrading the quality of your dress shirts, the more you'll want to make sure your new wardrobe staples live a long productive life. Which means aside from properly caring for your shirts (taking them to the dry cleaner rather than the clothes dryer, for starters), you'll also want to avoid the dreaded sweat stain at all costs. Yes, gentlemen, we're here to talk about perspiration. Before you turn your nose up in disgust, consider this: The New York Times
, The Smithsonian
, and NPR all recently covered this particular sticky situation, so we think it's safe to say that this subject matter is ripe for discussion. And, after all, everyone sweats.
The science of sweat and the products used to overcome it is of particular interest to a menswear company that creates luxury dress shirts. BOGA prides itself on the superior quality of cotton we use to craft our premium dress shirts. Rare Giza 45 cotton from Egypt and certified Sea Island cotton from the West Indian Caribbean islands are heralded for their extra-long staple fibers, which create the strongest and silkiest cotton fabrics available. Another bonus of utilizing 100 percent extra-long staple cotton to make an elevated dress shirt? Maximum breathability thanks to fine cotton's ability to absorb moisture in the summer as well as retain body heat in cooler temps. Even with better breathability, the last thing you want to do when wearing a quality dress shirt is ruin it by sweating through it or by wearing an ineffective antiperspirant that leaves telltale yellow stains under the arms. Whether you're dealing with a high-humidity workday, stealing the spotlight during a major client presentation, or extending a happy hour into a steamy date night, make sure you (and your shirt) are sheltered from anxiety-inducing sweat stains.
DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF
If you’re not already familiar with Certain Dri
, get ready for a product that could change your life (at least the part that worries about pit stains). Think of it as a next-level antiperspirant that stops sweat in its tracks. Manufactured by New Jersey-based DSE Healthcare Solutions and available online and in most major drug stores, clinical-strength Certain Dri isn't any ordinary antiperspirant. The application process may take some getting used to: First of all, you put on the product at bedtime. It's absorbed by the skin overnight, blocking pores, and inhibiting the release of moisture with aluminum chloride, the same active ingredient as prescription antiperspirants. Aluminum chloride is the strongest over-the-counter antiperspirant on the market because it penetrates to a deeper level of the sweat gland. The molecules are smaller than aluminum zirconium trichlorohydrex GLY, the ingredient found in most other antiperspirant products. Follow the directions to a T, and you're on your way to wearing all of your favorite shirts with no more underarm angst. Certain Dri roll-on and solid products (we prefer the roll-on, FYI) are water based, making them gentle on the skin after the initial getting-used-to-it phase. You will experience some sensitivity and itchiness at first, but that just means the aluminum chloride is doing its job. Stick with it, though, because this sensation goes away over time. The products are also colorless and fragrance free, meaning there’s no film to turn the underarms of your high-end dress shirts yellow. Now that you've invested in an exceptional shirt that gives you an air of sophistication, count on this potent product to preserve the look and feel. No matter how high-pressure your schedule may be, you're sure to remain one cool customer.
