Professional hockey player Brandon Bollig embodies what it means to be a BOGA man. His demanding career keeps him on the road (and in the spotlight), so Bollig needs a wardrobe that coordinates effortlessly, travels well, and makes him feel confident whether in front of the camera, at a high-profile event, or just going out to dinner. A member of the Stanley Cup-winning Chicago Blackhawks team and a current left wing with the Calgary Flames (America’s loss is clearly Canada’s gain), Bollig recently visited the BOGA Retail Store in Chicago’s West Loop to discuss his role as a BOGA Brand Ambassador and, of course, try on some clothes. Style That Scores
One of the reasons Bollig is a reflection of the BOGA brand? His enviable athletic build. After all, who better to rock BOGA’s athletic-fit denim than, well, a real, live professional athlete? Listed in the Calgary Flames roster at 6’2” and 223 pounds, Bollig’s four years as a pro hockey player (including his Stanley Cup-winning season with the Blackhawks in 2012-2013) as a notably dominant defensive player has given him a powerful physique. As he is quick to point out, an athletic body can be challenging to dress. “Pants are the toughest to fit,” Bollig says. “Jeans are a particular problem. It’s nearly impossible to find denim cut for more muscular legs that doesn't rip or fall apart.” Enter BOGA. Bollig remembers meeting BOGA founder and lead designer Jeff Burkard and relaying his clothing quandaries. “I talked to Jeff about BOGA denim accommodating more athletic builds. I tried on a few pairs of BOGA denim and found the perfect fit.” Bollig is referring to the BOGA Otto style, athletic-fit denim that is made for a more robust lower half. With a higher rise and proportionately larger leg openings, the BOGA Otto-fit denim also features a hint of stretch to move easily with active bodies while retaining its shape throughout the day. And, as with all of BOGA's denim, the Otto offers a slim, tailored cut, perfect for the modern, body-conscious man. Elegant Essentials
We’ve all seen the Instagrams of professional athletes arriving for away games and the constant TV footage of post-game interviews. Bollig lets us in on a little NHL secret: Unlike other professional sports, hockey players are required to wear suits not only on the plane, but to morning skate and after each game. He says most players bring a few different looks for each road trip, so their clothing choices need to be durable, flexible, and comfortable. “You need to be able to fold it up and still have it look good no matter where you are,” Bollig says. “Everything needs to coordinate easily and be versatile.” Bollig’s lifestyle also requires dressing up frequently for events – from big-league dinners to charity events. “I always enjoyed dressing up, even more so when I became a professional,” Bollig says. “Any opportunity to dress up, I take.” Bollig names his favorite items from the BOGA collection: wool-blend blazers, slim-fit dress shirts, the Fulton brogue shoes, and, of course, his indispensable Otto-fit denim. “Each item fits me so well and lasts so long,” he attests. “From the blazers and denim to the leather brogues, I’m a big BOGA fan.” Look 1: Bollig wears the Slim-Fit Dress Shirt in Purple Haze, the Otto Fit Denim in Brien, and the Highline Derby Dress Shoe in Saddle.
